Description
From the summit of Mt. Patino (1700 m. a.s.l.) there is a wonderful view of the plain of S. Scolastica, Norcia and of the imposing Mt. Vettore.
This mountain has very steep slopes with rocky walls, canyons and scree; the pasture land is poor and open with dry grass, yet it has a wild, imposing beauty of its own. This is a mountain ridge that closes the plain of S. Scolastica to the west and which appears to “hold back” the Pian Grande di Castelluccio to the west like an enormous dam.
This complex reveals the profound transformations that have taken place over the centuries thanks to the influence of man on the original, natural landscape. Extensive mountains so near to a large, very old pastoral centre such as Norcia enjoy a vegetative and consequently animal environment that has been shaped literally by the shepherd and his sheep.
An oasis for the protection of wildlife consisting of 2,400 ha of mountains has been set up.
